Engine Cooling problem
1977 Chevy Corvette V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I had to replace the heater hosw that comes out of the water pump. After I had it hooked up, I refilled the radiator and started the engine. There was a little squeeling from the pump and the coolent did not circulate, the engine got hot. Up to this time, the pump worked fine. Does the pump need to be primed? I'm hoping that the squeel was from the belt slipping because the coolant had leaked on it. Any Ideas? I'd rather not have to replace the water pu, p but will if necessary.

Hi there,

The water pump will not require priming as such, the squeal may very well be coolant on the belt, if you have access to a pressure tester you can help expel all the air by applying a little pressure to the full radiator and with a heater hose loose just back the hose off until coolant starts to flow, this should be enough for the entire system to start circulating and expel the remaining air.
