Engine Mechanical problem
1986 Chevy Celebrity 6 cyl Automatic

Have a celebrity eurosport that I cant get started. It has been sitting for a year. The people I bought it from said that the fuel pump was out. I replaced the fuel pump and still nothing. We checked the lines and gas is coming up from the tank but when it hits the carb. Nothing. We put gas in the carb and the car runs till the gas runs out. What is the problem? Please I am desperate to get this car running for my aunt.

Thanks,
Heather

I think this is a TBI unit not a carb. If it has two big round things on the top then it is. Anyhow they should spray fuel into the intake manifold. It will be pretty fine and hard to see. See if you are getting power to the TBI unit as there should be 4 wires coming on top. Alot of times these loose their connection and won't allow the injectors to spray fuel. If this is a carb, then with the fuel pump on tap the top of it with a screwdriver handle as the needle an dseat may be stuck. It may free it up to run.

My son has a 1986 Celebrity. It definitely has a carburetor. It is likely a SE or ESE carb. They're no fun. I had one years ago that had a TBI. TBI is definitely superior to the over-complicated unreliable carb. There's a fuel mmixture solenoid in front on top which chronically fails. A new one runs about $175. Not worth throwing parts at it if you can't afford to pay a tech to properly diagnose and repair it. My suggestion is that you get it running and dump it ASAP. Do you really want your Aunt rolling around in that old piece of crap? I wouldn't.
