Fan speed stages one and two not working.

I have a 1997 chevy cavalier. Two door with the four cylinder. Low mileage, about 70000. I originally had all four speeds of the fan working. Then the lowest setting quit working, then the second lowest speed. Now all I have is the third and fourth speeds which is hard to keep comfortable without being extremely noisy the whole time. I tried to start taking dash apart to replace switch, but I could not figure out how to remove face without seemingly breaking it. Then I thought I would ask if it could be something else before I really do break something. Could the something with the blower be bad if two of four speeds still work? Or do I have to replace the switch? And if so, how do I get that out? Thank you

I believe the problem you are having is not in the selector switch. Where the fan motor is underneath the dash is. Think its called a switch resister it looks like a slinky spring square box. I believe is had a wiring plug in it. Also has 4 bolts that hold it into place. That should correct youre problem. In stead of buying it from the gm dealer just get one from the junk yard.

Good Luck.

My girlfriends Cav has the same problem. No low or middle low, just high and full frickin' blast. The dealership told me that the whole control unit has to come out and be replaced. I know this can't be true and they just want money. I had this problem on my 99 Sentra and all I had to do was replace a resistor card.

Does the 2002 Cav has a resistor card or block somewhere? Or are we screwed?
