Suggested Repair

Replace the coolant temperature sensor near the thermostat housing. Identify it by the yellow wire and a purple or brown wire, and do the work with the engine cold.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1995 Chevy Cavalier with 144,000 miles says it runs very rough when cold but runs well after warming up and when the outside temperature is above about 60°F. The oxygen and air intake sensors tested good. The expert recommends replacing the coolant temperature sensor near the thermostat housing, identified mainly by its yellow wire and a purple or brown wire, with the engine cold.
