Are you talking about changing the whole compressor and freon or are you talking about converting from R-12 to R134? Due to the current laws of the EPA you should have a certified tech. Do this for you. The system is under high pressure. If you are familiar with the system then you know you need to have a vacuum pump and or recovery system to evacuate the old freon.
A vacuum should hold on the system for 24 hrs before pressurizing the system with the new freon.
