I have a 96 cavalier 2.2l at.. I have replaced the motor a few months ago and went to put in a thermostat and have had nothing but heating issues and problems so far. I have replaced the thermostat, lower hose, water pump, radiator, and have bleed the system many times witn no such luck. the temp goes all the way to h and then returns to normal oper temp and heat for a little bit but then goes away. i have repeatedly bleed the system and im about out of options. i am going to replace the thermostat and see if that is the issue but any one else have any SOLUTIONS?

check your selector switch to see if the problem is in the switch or duct system. also check the heater control valve. i'm not sure where under the hood it would be located on that model, but you could at least look into those areas. oh.. also your heater core could be clogged up. to check get the motor nice and hot and touch both heater hosescoming in and going out from the heater core. if one is not as hot or even cool then u need to replace the heater core.

Suggested Repair

Check the heater selector switch and duct system, the heater control valve, and the heater core. With the engine fully hot, compare both heater hoses; if one is noticeably cooler, replace the heater core.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2L reports intermittent overheating and loss of cabin heat after an engine replacement, despite replacing the thermostat, lower hose, water pump, and radiator and repeatedly bleeding the cooling system. The expert recommends checking the heater selector switch, duct system, heater control valve, and a possibly clogged heater core by comparing the temperatures of the heater hoses.
