Alright. Chevy Camaro 1992. Auto trans. 115,000 miles. So about 2 months ago the alternator went bad. We replaced that and have ran into more and more problems. After the alternator the car would start and then just chug and die. Smoke is coming up around the block the the EGR valve was making weird noises. We replaced the EGR valve. Now we have this smoke coming from somewhere around the block and the car will just start and run for thirty seconds then die. Could I have a cracked head? Could it be the manifold? I have no idea what could be wrong with it. I thought the alternator was it but it wasnt. Any idea what could be goin on? I know it is pretty wide open as to what it could be. Im looking for any suggestions right now. I dont want to have to take it to a shop but I might have to. Thanks for any advice/help.

Is it oil smoke or steam?
Are you getting oil pressure?
Is your coolant temperature rising, and are you losing coolant?
Are you losing oil, and is your oil filter on tight enough to seal?
Is there water in the oil?
Is there oil in the water?

I would give the engine a thorough looking over. Give your best examination to see if fluid is leaking anywhere at all. Check all your radiator hoses for leaks, especially hard to reach ones that feed the heater core. You may have one with a small leak that's spraying hot coolant onto the engine.

If your water pump is bad, it will "weep" coolant. That also could possibly be the steam you're seeing.

If you're losing oil, antifreeze, or both, and can't find a specific place it's leaking from, you may be right in your guess. You could have a serious leak in a head gasket, a cracked head, or a cracked block.

I suggest trying a block, head, and gasket sealer treatment if you're not wanting to take it to a garage. I'd go for Bar's Liquid Copper Block Sealer.
