A few days ago I was leaving my house when the engine started stuttering violently when I would accelerate at anything but a crawling pace. I nursed the car home and waited to take a look at it the next day.

Upon starting it the next day, it revved roughly to about 2.5k rpm and then eventually settled back to around 1k and I had the same stutter problem upon acceleration.

Today I took it upon myself to go pick up an OBDII reader and the codes read initially:
P0300 Random/Multiple cylinder misfire
p0155 O2 Sensor
P1406 EGR

I cleared the codes and disconnected the EGR (but left on the engine and it returned only the P1406.

So I have pulled the EGR and I am in the process of cleaning it up. It appears to be rather caked with carbon (see attached pic). Does this sound like the solution (clean and/or replace EGR) or should I be looking somewhere else first?

Thank you,
C. Weisman

Hi
Cleaning pintle is good step cause if carbon keeps it from seating then code is set. Also maybe faulty positioner sensor if PCM receives improper info code is set. see diagram

You have a digital one.
The EGR may cause the random misfire,
check to see if the EGR valve diaphragm moves freely
Use your finger to reach up under the valve and push on the diaphragm. If it does not moves freely, the valve should be replace, if it moves just clean it:
inspect valve pintle for deposit
depress the valve diaphragm and check around the valve seat area.
Use a wire brush to carefully clean deposits from the pintle.
Remove any deposits from the valve outlet with a screwdriver
if EGR passage in the intake manifold have an excessive build up of deposit, the passage should be cleaned
You will need a new gasket when reinstalling it.
