Engine Cooling problem
1995 Chevy Camaro 6 cyl Automatic 150000 miles

recently when I am driving anywhere, in about 5-10 min the temp gauge goes all the way past the red and sometimes it will rapidly go down to about 3/4.
The week before the temp went past full, the gauge would go a little past 3/4 and then back to half at random times.

The car seems to run fine.

Are you actually overheating? Could be just the temp. Gauge out of calibration or the engine coolant temperature sensor. Once again you need to check the thermostat and report back its status

No, it actually isn't overheating
I discovered the hose connecting to the thermostat housing was extremely hot, and the only hose to be hot.
I flushed out the coolant and added new coolant.
I changed the thermostat, but when I tried putting the housing back, the black gasket was not covered completely. Is that normal?
Anyway the temp still rose up

The gasket should not be showing redo it-if you're not overheating could be the coolant temperature sensor or the engine temperature gauge sender is defective-test it

You can run it without the thermostat if this is what you're trying to say and see what happens
