i have an 83 camaro z-28, crossfire duel throttle body engine, I removed all fuel injection, installed 4 bbl carb, disconnected computer, can I still use the hei distributor by just leaving the 4 wire connector unplugged, or do I need to get an old style

Get the old style HEI as you already disconnected th computer and itwill always look to hook up with it. If you can afford it though switch over to a port fuel system, as it 's much better driveability and fuel mileage. You can always find a "short" computer and wiring to make it run which you would wan tto do.
