1996 Chevy Blazer

my blazer is stuck in 4WD and I can't get it out. I have tried shifting it into 2WD and then driving in reverse and that does not work. I have also tried shifting it while driving down the road. The blazer is now not shifting properly and "putting" down the road and spitting black smoke from the exhaust. How can I get it out of 4WD and back into 2WD?

Hi:
The black smoke indicates a rich mixture. Is the check engine light on? Also, is this an electric or manual shift 4wd?

I have a feeling the engine and 4wd problem are related. What I need you to do is check for vacuum leaks. The transfercase receives vacuum from the engine and then transfers it to the front axle. If there is a major leak, the engine will miss. Actually, one would think it would run lean, but the computer may be trying to overcompensate for the reading it's getting from the O2 sensor. Also, with out the vacuum, you are stuck in 4wd.

Let me know if you find a leak.
