My 1998 chevy astro was running perfect as of recently other than alittle knocking noise we figured out it was the fan clutch shortly after that I was in the process of driving to work when all of a sudden the van just shut down. The van still has batterry power but wont turn over and start. Just wondering if thats the starter or mabe the altinator but we just replaced that less then a year ago.

To be sure I have the symptoms right, the starter does not make any sound, and it does not spin the engine. If that is wrong, please set me straight. It could be the starter or the alternator, but there are plenty of other possibilities.

Since 1987, GM has had a real lot of trouble with their new style generator. It is common to go through four to six of them in the life of the vehicle. Even when they still recharge the battery, they can produce voltage spikes that interfere with the dozens of computers on the vehicle.

The first thing to do is see how bright the headlights are and what happens to them when you try to crank the engine. A more accurate test is to use a cheap digital voltmeter to measure battery voltage. With that, we can start at the battery and find where the voltage is being lost.
