Hello,

I drove to work like normal, parked the car and 5 minutes later it cut off. I got it towed home and my first thought was my fuel pump went out. But I am smelling gas and seeing it from the carburetor. The spark plugs and wires are only 2 months old. So I went and changed the distributor, rotor, coil pack and ignition module. All new and car still not starting. It will turn over but will not start. Anything you can think of will help.
Thank you

Good afternoon,

Make sure the pink wire going to the cap has power with the key in the on position.

Beyond that, there is a pick up coil in the distributor that was a common failure. I attached a picture of the pick up coil.

The distributor has to be removed, the gear pin removed the gear removed from the shaft. Then remove the shaft and you can remove the pick up coil.

Also, does the rotor turn when you crank it?

Yes, the rotor does rotate when I try to crank it.

This pink wire you mentioned , where is it located? And about the pick up coil, that's what connects to the ignition module right? Just to be sure I'm looking at the pic correctly..

You are welcome.

The pink wire is the power wire to the distributor cap. Check that for power with the key on.

Yes, that is the piece that attaches to the module.

That comes from the ignition switch.

I attached the wiring for the ignition switch and the location of the switch.

I believe the pink wire is getting power I checked it with my meter and the red light came on. I am going to check the pickup coil and go from there. I appreciate it thank you will let you know my results.

Hey, I'm back man. I didn't change everything I can think of. I don't know how to change the pickup coil. I can't get my distributor off so I don't know what's going on. I didn't change like I said everything I can think of and only thing is doing is turning over. I'm lost man.

You need to remove it to get to the coil. Soak it down and keep trying.

Thanks, but my question is, how do I remove it when I look it up it says it just pulls right out but don't see that happening.

Due to the age, it is stuck in the block.

Mark the position with a paint stick and when you remove the lock down bolt, try twisting it first to release the o-ring, then lift it up.

Hello again, so I just unplug each spark plug wire one by one and tested it against the ground of the car and I got a little arc from each wire each wire gave me a arc so I'm guessing I'm getting fire. Because I got to arc from each wire. I'm lost; I just changed my fuel pump filter or at least I was thinking I was changing it. took it off and seen it was never a filter in there that goes to the carburetor. could that be the problem I'm having me not having a fuel pump filter?

There is a filter inside the carburetor.

Remove the line from the inlet to the carburetor. It is a 5/8 line.

Then remove the fitting from the carburetor. It should be either a 15/16 or 1 inch open end wrench. There will be a filter behind that fitting with a spring. It could be stone or a paper filter.

Okay, it sounds like you do not have enough spark. There should be a crisp spark for it to fire the spark plugs.

Hello RJANDIANNA I am Tom,

So you have an old one here with an actual carburetor and you saw it leaking? is that been handled or are you still seeing it leak? You might be flooded by now too. You should pull a spark plug and see if its wet. If it is wet pull them all and let them dry out, crank the engine over a bit with the plugs out. So your showing spark but not blue?or is it orange? You have to get to the bottom of the leak and smell from the very beginning. If the float stuck that would happen, tap the side of the carburetor with the handle of a screw driver lightly tap the side of the carburetor right before you have the clean, dry, plugs back in the car and your gong for the first start after confirming the plugs are good. If they are dry Let us know.

Hello Tom,

At work right now, but I did take the 1 and 2 spark plug out and they where wet a little. The spark was blue on some and orange on the others. What does that mean?

You are going to have to get the distributor loose in order to remove it and replace the pick up coil.

Sometimes if you take a long punch, you hit down on the flat part where the holder is located, it will shock the base loose and allow you to turn it and lift it out.

It will take patience but you need to get it out.

Hi,
The blue spark is a good hot spark and the orange is a weaker spark. okay, so you have wet plugs meaning raw fuel done there and they is a good chance the are fouling out, you need to get them dried out.

Hi,

I'm really of the feeling that the carburetor is messing up and the float probably stuck open tapping it most likely will free it up or the choke stopped working maybe the wire fell off and its closed. although that doesn't get to the leak at the carburetor. either way what I've done for a quick check of fuel or spark being the issue is spraying a little starting fluid in the carburetor or if in the air cleaner a little longer of a spray. It should get some ignition if the spark is okay then it will stall out right away if it's a fuel issue unless it is the float that stuck and tapping freed it up. To over come the flooding thing on that first start push the gas pedal to the floor and don't let it up until it actually starts. Hopefully after it cranks a few it will catch and a big cloud might come out the back but then should be normal after that. A good carburetor cleaning is probably in order if it starts. Can you maybe upload a pic of the carburetor with the air cleaner housing off it showing the spot where the fuel leaked.
Thanks.
Keep us posted,
Tom

I went ahead and took the whole distributor out and ordered a new distributor is coming with the electronic components as well. my question is, once I put that in I know I might have to find top dead center and after I do that is there anything else that I need to know that should give me spark or stop me from getting spark?

Okay, did you mark the way the distributor came out?

You need to mark the position of the rotor and the vacuum advance.

Let me know when you are ready to install it. Then we can go over how to set it.

If it is, it is incorrect.

I attached the correct one from Rock auto. It does not have the vacuum advance.

Hey Roy,

The new distributor from Rock Auto came in. I tried to mimic the marks from the old distributor to the new one just to get in the ballpark I hope. but, I'm ready whenever you are.

So I got the distributor in and got it at top dead center I believe because I got the piston at the number one spark plug with the rotor point at the number one spark plug and I still got no fire still not starting. I mean do you think my timing belt went out? my timing chain I was told my timing chain probably went out it probably jump timing and my timing out. any thoughts?

Hello,

Your car has a chain and it would be very rare for it to jump a tooth. Earlier you said that your spark wasn't blue meaning the timing was working to some extent the ignition coil could be part of the weak spark and when under compression it could become worse. to none.Testing the coil for leakage is on order you should have infinite ohms from the coil ignition wire (The one that goes to the distributor) to either one of the other terminals positive and negative and you should very few ohms across positive and negative. You can bench test the coil without removing it. If you take the coil output wire connect it to a plug directly make sure the housing of the plug is held onto the block or a good ground and run a lead to the negative battery terminal and the positive side touch the positive battery terminal another wire with a quick hit you will generate a spark if the color isn't blue the coil is weak if there is no spark the coil is bad. Give that a try and let us now the condition of the spark.
