I have a rt 5.7 hemi. My car will not crank. I tried to start it over and over and nothing happened. I replaced the starter so it is brand new, the battery tested 100% good, and the alternator tested good. When I start the car I hear the fuel pump moving and all the lights come on as normal but the car will not crank and start up. Please help

Hello,

This could be a problem with fuse #33 in the Interior Power Distribution Center. It is located in the trunk under the spare tire access panel. This fuse is responsible for protecting the starting circuit. I have included a couple of links down below for you to go to:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-a-car-fuse-works
https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-a-car-fuse

I have also included a wiring diagram of your vehicle's starting system and a diagram of the Interior Power Distribution Center in the diagrams down below. Please go through these guides and get back to us with what you are able to find out.

Thanks,
Alex

Awesome thanks for the quick response! I will check this fuse to see if it is the issue and get back to you as soon as possible. Hopefully this is a small fixable issue. :D

Hello Alex,

I checked the fuse #33 ignition switch/wireless module and it tested good. I switched it to a brand new fuse anyway but I am still unable to get my car started.

Hello again,

Okay, let's both look at this together. You have the wiring diagram of your vehicle starting system that I sent you. So let's start working our way from the starter back to the battery since the easy didn't work.. This is a process of elimination, so bear with us. I have included a few links for you to go to below:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/jack-up-and-lift-your-car-safely
https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-use-a-voltmeter

You will need an assistant to help you with this. We want to take a voltage reading at the light green wire of the starter connector with an assistant cranking the engine. Please ensure that the vehicle is in park with the emergency brake on. Please get back to us with this reading. I have included more diagrams in the diagrams below.

Thanks,
Alex

Hello,

Okay. The hum is probably going to be your fuel pump. It should come on a a few seconds when your ignition key hits run to prime the fuel system. Okay, you have battery voltage at the starter, is the starter cranking your engine?

Thanks,
Alex

Hello again,

Okay, you have battery voltage at the starter, so I'm thinking that the starter is bad out of the box, But your battery voltage is a little low. If you can, try to jump start your vehicle. I have included a link below if you are not familiar with how to do this below.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-jump-start-car-battery-using-jumper-cables

If a jump start isn't possible, you can take your battery to a auto parts store, like AutoZone, and they will load test it for free. If you are able to try a jump start and it still does nothing or your battery tests good, then your vehicle's starter has failed and it is bad out of the box. Please let us know how everything turns out.

Thanks,
Alex

Could the ground cable attached the start prevent the starter from working? Because I replaced the starter and it fired up but it only worked for a few days but the issues I had was exactly the same before I replaced it.

Hello again,

Yes it could. Check the wiring connecting to the battery's negative terminal from the body ground for any burnt or melted insulation. What would happen is the battery voltage would go to the starter but would have no return path to the battery. It would look for any path back to it, and would try to return via smaller ground wires frying them. Think of electricity in your car the same way you would think of water. The battery is a giant lake, wires are pipes, and the load (in this case the starter) as a water wheel. The water leaves the lake and goes through a huge pipe(to allow a lot of flow (AMPS) to the water wheel because the wheel needs a lot of power to do it's job(electric motor to turn over your engine). When the water has turned the water wheel it needs to return to the lake, but it can't. What is going to happen to the water wheel? It is going to stop because the whole system will be backed up. The same thing will happen with electricity. Check the ground wires(Return to the lake) and get back to us with what you are able to find out.

Thanks,
Alex

I got my starter tested and it tested good. The readings on the power cable to the starter was 12.09. The reading to the switch was 11.72, and the reading for the battery was 12.12. Just an update on the progress. I started the car and it sounded like the starter was going to kick in then it gave out again. I didn't see any corrosion on the ground cable. This is what the cables are looking like.

Hello again,

Did you have your battery load tested. The voltage readings at the starter are a little on the low side. This very well could be the problem.

Thanks,
Alex

I just tested it. The high was 11.86 the low was 11.56. But keep in mind the car still is not cranking so the alternator is not going to charge the battery.

Hello,

Here is a link to load test a battery but it calls for starting the vehicle:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/car-battery-load-test

When I was going through Honda University they taught us that a battery was fully charged at 12.6 volts(6 plates X 2.1V/plate), 75% charged at 12.45 volts, 50% charged at 12.3 volts, 25% charged at 12.15 volts, and dead at 12 volts. So with what my training from Honda of North America is telling me and the fact that you do have battery voltage at your vehicle's starter is that the battery doesn't have the capacity to run the starter, the starter is bad, or your vehicle's flywheel/flex plate is bent and not messing up with the starter's Bendix gear. You can take your battery to an auto parts store and have it load tested for free, or try to start your vehicle with a jump start from another vehicle. Please let us know how things turn out.

Thanks,
Alex

I've done all of that and it tested fine. The battery may be dead now because I've been messing with the vehicle trying to get it to start. But the readings I just gave you are current.
