So today we stopped at a red light and the car turned itself off. We put it in neutral, and as long as we pressed the gas it would stay running and move, but then a loud noise that sounded like we were revving the engine at high speeds came from the exhaust. It was higher pitched than the normal exhaust sound, in fact it almost sounded like a cow in distress. As soon as we stopped pressing on the gas it would shut off again, no check engine light. There was a smell, kind of sweet but not like a coolant smell. We just had work done on the car, the guy patched 3 major leaks in the intake tubes. We also have a catted downpipe we just put in, a new intercooler, and replaced the exhaust. Any ideas as to what is going on please?

Hi,

I have to start by knowing if the parts that you replaced are factory parts or are they aftermarket? As far as the smell, you mentioned that it doesn't smell like coolant. Could it be from the catalytic converter?

Let me know.

They are aftermarket, and I am honestly not sure where the smell could be coming from.

Where were you when you noticed it? Also, is there any evidence of coolant usage?

We were at a stoplight, the car shutoff, and when we started it again the smell appeared. The coolant seems to be running through normally, and there doesn't appear to be any leaks or anything like that. I've had issues with coolant in previous cars, and the smell just didn't match up to a coolant issue I have experienced before.

Is it possible for you to record the sound you hear from the exhaust? I am questioning if it is something from the turbo. When you drive it now, other than the noise or stalling issue, is there a lack of power? Have you scanned the CAN bus system for codes? Have you checked all connections to the new intercooler?
