That could be the result of a few things, low fuel pressure, plugged catalytic converter, cam or crankshaft sensor issues and the list continues.
If the check engine light is on with the engine running, I suggest having the computer scanned to identify diagnostic trouble codes. Here is a quick video showing how it is done:

I realize most people don't own a scanner, but often times a parts store will do it for you or lend you one.
Do this first and let me know what you find. If there are codes, it will point us in the direction of the issue.
