I can turn my van on and it will idle perfectly. Put it in reverse and I can drive anywhere I want. Put it in drive, does a slight shake and shuts off. I placed my van on a hill and put it in neutral and drifted to a higher speed and pulled into drive, started to drive fine. As soon as I slowed down to stop, it shut off. I took it to a mechanic, without looking at it, he said I need a new transmission. Any ideas? Thank you!

Good morning,

This is an indication of the torque converter locked up. It is like a stick shift that the clutch will not disengage when you come to a stop.

The transmission would have to be removed and inspected. If there are metal particles in the fluid, then yes, you need another transmission.
