Temperature stays on 160, fan runs at high. Already changed the temperature sensor. Maybe thermostat?

Hi,

On this new of a vehicle, the problem can be a few different things. You have already replaced the engine coolant temp sensor (ECT) which has caused no change.

Let me try to explain another possibility. Certain resistance conditions with intake air temperature sensor (IAT) or ECT sensors may cause unwarranted cooling fan activation. If the ECM is commanding the cooling fan on for no apparent reason and without any component or system DTCs set, the IAT or ECT sensor may be skewed. If this condition is suspected, we need to compare temperature versus resistance.

However, before we do that, I need you to let me know a couple of things. First, if the engine isn't overheating, the thermostat isn't the issue. Have you tried scanning the can-bus system to see if there are diagnostic trouble codes stored? CAN stands for controller area network. Basically, all computers/modules are tied together via a few wires. This type of scan will retrieve codes regardless of the module in which they are stored. This should be done.

Here is a quick video showing how it's done:

If there are no diagnostic codes, we need to check the temperature /resistance values from the IAC. Since the ECT is new, I don't suspect it is an issue.

I attached a wiring schematic below so you have a reference. You will need a scan tool to retrieve temperatures and resistance. The last pic below shows the temperature vs resistance chart.

This isn't too simple and I understand that. However, I'm here to help if you need me.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe
