I was trying to find out what size hydraulic cam would be good to use in my engine to make it thump really good without having to do a anything to the stock heads. Oh, I forgot to mention the engine has been bored 40 over and I'm running a 600 duel line Holly carburetor on it.

The lope common to big cams is due to the lift and overlap of the cam lobes. Yes, it sounds good but without doing head work it is limited because the stock springs and keepers cannot handle the stress of the higher lift. It also seriously reduces the low end power of the engine so if you wanted to daily it, they can be a real handful. I would suggest going to Comp cams or Isky and run through the configurator and find a cam that meets your desires. I would also suggest thinking about what you really desire out of the truck as well.

Well, the truck is just going to be a weekend driver. Summit Racing told me that I could put up to a 480 duration cam in it using stock heads with stock springs but I just don't know about that.

Well, you can stick a big cam into virtually any engine, the issue then becomes if you want to drive it with that cam. If it was me, I'd probably look at the cam they used in the Mustang for the 302 that year and maybe go a bit more aggressive. It's really easy to go too large with a cam and then you get to swap it again. I'd say something more in the 270-300 duration range and.500 or so lift. I'd probably swap it to a roller cam as well simply, so you don't need any oil additives with the higher pressures. Something like the Comp K31-600-8 maybe. Take a look at that and see what you think. If you go on the 2CarPros YouTube site there is a video of a Ford build that might give you some ideas.
