The first thing I would check is if there is pressure in the system. When the motor is warm, do not risk it getting near the point where it overheats as hot steam may burn you, grab the upper radiator hose and squeeze it. It should have some firmness or resitance, but if it collapses when you do so, there is a problem in the colling system somewhere.
If there is pressure, then I would replace the thermostat. Even if that solves the problem, get a new radiator cap as well since it is best to replace both if either fails anyway.
