I am thinking of buying an otherwise mint, well-maintained (with papers) 2019 Expedition XLT. I noticed that the bumper was not completely level and there was a minor crack in it. Not a big deal. But when I looked behind it, the Active Grille Shutter was in pieces. Apparently, the guy hit a small deer a couple of years ago. Throws a P05A1:00-2F code, without activating the check engine light. I know that there can be problems if the system is locked closed, but basically there is no AGS system there at all. Is it a big deal for this to be missing/not working? The price of the vehicle is good and it otherwise mint. I don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill, but I don't want major issues down the road.

For extra credit, what would be involved in buying the part and replacing it? Is it something that is easy enough to do by removing the front bumper cover and undoing some bolts, or is it a big complex production?

Thanks!

Apparently there is an upper and lower active shutter assembly. Here is the price for the parts and the instructions on how to change them out.

Radiator Shutter Assembly
Lower JL1Z8475D $514.95
Upper JL1Z8475C $1087.05

The book gets

Lower 1.5 HRS
Upper 2.1 HRS

Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.

A appreciate the pictures. Can I assume also that the bumper cover must be removed? If so, what is the procedure for that?

Second, what if both of the shutters are missing? Is it a big problem? Previous owner went two years with them as is and reported no issues.

They will cause the check engine light to be on with trouble codes. Yes, you need to remove the front cover to get at the shutters. Here is how to remove the grill and headlights. Check out the images (below). Let us know how it goes.

They do not cause the check engine light to go on. The car has been running two years without the shutters. I only found the trouble code because I did a scan. It's apparently a "soft" code. Does the code I got "P05A1:00-2F" tell me which or the shutters is broken?

It is shutter "A" which should be the top one.

The code P05A1:00-2F on a 2019 Ford Expedition is related to the Active Grille Shutter (AGS) "A" Position Sensor Circuit.
