Changed fuel filter out on front of carb, now the engine will not idle. Only can keep car running while keeping foot on gas pedal. It is a 3.8 turbo. The new fuel filter is sealed on one end and has a rubber gasket on the other, which way does the gasket go. Also is there any springs needed and is there a special tightness for the fuel filter housing.

There are no springs. As far as the filter, the gasket points out. When the car stalls, can you smell raw fuel? Also, was there any trouble prior to replacement?

Yes there is a raw gas smell now since gas filter was changed out properly. Adjusted carburator so stalling does not occur. But cannot get rid of the raw gas smell now.

There has to be a leak somewhere. If the engine is running properly now, check connections, hoses, and steel lines for leaks.
