The car recently appeared with a broken boot on the front left side of the car. The axle is fine. However, there is a bothering noise coming from the car.

Everything comes in pairs. We just answered a similar question a few minutes ago.

Replacing a half shaft is less expensive than replacing just the outer joint, and it is not a real expensive job. The symptom is a clicking noise when moving and turning to one side, and most commonly when backing up.

Some outer CV joints on imports are permanently-locked to the shaft. To replace the boot, the entire shaft has to be removed, the inner joint and boot must be removed, then the new boot can be slid across the shaft to the outer joint. You also have to wash out the joint and put in new grease. All of this costs a lot more in time than the cost of a rebuilt half shaft.

If there is some other noise concern, you have to describe it or what makes it appear or stop.

If you think it is the mechanics of the axle making the noise, it may be time for a new or re-manufactured one.

If it is the rubber remnants making the racket, cut them off and see if it disappears.

Trash/dirt is what escalates CV Joint failure. The boot is what keeps it clean and the lube contained (probably knew that already).

Below is a picture of a really easy DIY and good fix, If you adhere to the directions. Do not let that cost scare you!

Could be that the new lube might quiet the racket.

Let us know how it goes,
