What does a BCM consist of and/or control on my car? Do you need my VIN?

Welcome to 2CarPros.

The body control module controls many things. Here is a list from my manual. Take a look through it and let me know if it helps. If there is a specific issue you are dealing with, let me know what it is and I'll try my best to help.

Body Control Module
The various BCM input and output circuits are described in the corresponding functional areas indicated on the BCM electrical schematics. The Body Control Module functions include the following:
- A/C compressor request.
- Remote Function Control.
- A/C cooling Fan.
- Audio Delay Power.
- Exterior and interior lighting control.
- Daytime running lights (DRL)
- Automatic lighting control
- Fog lamps
- Interior lighting.
- Battery rundown protection (Inadvertent Power).
- Chimes.
- Key-In-Ignition
- Head Lamps On
- Seat Belt Not Fastened
- Turn Signal On
- Park Brake Warning
- Door Ajar Warning
- Check gages
- Gage control.
- Instrument cluster indicator control.
- Theft deterrent.
- Engine coolant level sensing.
- Washer solvent level sensing.
- Key-in-ignition sensing.
- Seat belt use sensing.
- Brake fluid level sensing.
- Parking brake state sensing.
- Rear compartment interface.
- Horn interface.
- Door lock interface.
- Bulb Check.

Thank you for the information. I'm left shaking my head. Reason why I asked about that was my car randomly shuts off at idle in park, at stop light and while driving down the road. I wiggled harness under the hood, no change. Whatever is causing car to shut off at same time it causes map codes to come up and no mil light. Po108 and po1106. When this issue happens the rpm needle falls down because something is shutting off then it cuts back on. And at times motor stops turning but rpm needle stays around 2,000, 2,500 or 3,100 for just barely a few seconds. So during this time various actuators slash components are still working. I popped the hood and saw and heard. Weird. Doesn't last for long. Did this before I replaced computer and map. But these codes were before I replaced comp.102,108,102 history, 108 history, 300, 620 history, 1106. Things run just a little smoother but still cuts off and sometimes the rpm needle plays hang time, plus the only code that comes up now is po108. Any ideas?
Anything similar from other grand am owners? By the way when I start the car the service engine light goes out before service vehicle. Does that mean anything? Sigh. Thanks again

Welcome back:

The code is related to the map sensor. Have you checked voltages to it?

Don't laugh, but this could even be related to a faulty coolant temp sensor (ECT). Do you have a live data scanner? If you do, check to confirm the ECT is close to the temp you feel the coolant would be. Also, the throttle angle sensor can be an issue as well.

As far as the MAP, again, you need a live data scanner. For the code to be set, the PCM detects that the MAP sensor voltage is more than 4.3 volts for 3 seconds. So the voltage needs to be checked.

Also, the computer is designed to identify the failure in the event it happens more than once. If the diagnostic reports a failure on the second consecutive ignition cycle, the control module records the operating conditions at the time of the failure. The control module writes the operating conditions to the Freeze Frame and updates the Failure Records. So again, if you have a scanner, I would suggest looking at freeze frame information to help identify where the failure begins.

I don't know if you have the scanner to do these checks, so let me know. Also, I attached a flow chart to help diagnose this code. See pics 1 and 2.

If there is something you can't see on the chart, let me know. I will watch for your reply.

Take care and try to have a good weekend.

Joe

Thanks again. I checked fuel press. Key on engine off (48 psi.) Engine running was 40-42 psi). Is this normal for my car? By the way, Haynes says 52 to 59 psi key on engine off. Any ideas? Thanks again.

The pressure is low. Here are the specs right from Alldata:

2004 Pontiac Grand AM V6-3.4L VIN E
Fuel Pump Pressure
Vehicle Powertrain Management Fuel Delivery and Air Induction Fuel Pump Specifications Pressure, Vacuum and Temperature Fuel Pump Pressure
FUEL PUMP PRESSURE
Fuel Pressure (Key ON, Engine OFF). 358-405 kPa (52-59 psi)
