How do I replace the alternator on a BMW X5 2003?

It will require some special tools. Start with removal of the fan (this is left hand thread and where the special tools are needed) and shroud, remove the belts, pull the tensioner and deflection pulleys and the the lower alternator bolt and out it comes.
