the speedometer began to work erradically, sometimes indicating speed. After a week of sporadic behavior, the speedometer no longer measures any speed. Could it be a fuse? What can I do to fix the problem or trouble shoot?

It's a 1985 325e, 6 cylinder engine, with approximately 130k miles. I don't have the vin number available at this time.

Thank you for the undated information. The most likely cause of the problem is the driver for the speedometer. the easiest and quickest fix is to replace the complete speedometer assembly. This is a part you can find in a salvage yard. Send me a PM and I can recommend one.
