The air filter assembly is the first thing that needs to be removed, then the alternator mounting bolts(there are two of them) then the wiring, there is a small blue wire that is held by an 8nn nut and the battery lead is a 13mm nut. That will allow the alternator to be removed. Having said all that, the problem could just be the brushes in the brush pack that also is the voltage regulator are worn too far and the brush pack needs replacement and this is done without removing the alternator, just the two screws holding the brush pack to the rear of the alternator.
