318i Engine light goes on intermittently

I have a 1994 318i with 138 000 KMs (Canada). Over the past year the Engine light will turn on for a short period of time (couple minutes) then turn off. It may not turn on again for the rest of the week. My Mechanic (local private shop) informed me that he will have to perform a diagnostic on the car but I'm concerned that by the time he finds out what the problem is, I will have repaired or replaced half the car! Could you please give me an idea as to what it could be. The repair history is basic maintenance i.E brakes, oil changes etc. I did replace the ball joints. Everything else incl. Clutch is original. Passed emissions test. Thanks

It's a bridge you need to cross, or take the real expensive route and replace the car.

The problem is emission related and should get addressed before too long or you may into more repair costs from putting it off. Diagnosing isn't always black and white, so cut the shop a little slack. Ask them questions if you don't understand them.
