If the check engine light is staying on when the engine is running, you need to have the computer scanned to identify diagnostic trouble codes. Here is a quick video that shows how it is done:

I realize most people don't own a scanner, but most parts stores will scan it for free or rent a scanner to you. Once you have that done, let me know the codes that were found.
Next, here is a link that discusses the most common causes for an engine not to idle (stall at idle). Take a look through it.

Let me know if anything in that link is helpful. Also, engine idle speed is controlled by a component called an idle air control valve (IAC). If the IAC is plugged or not working, the engine will not idle. Here is a link that discusses how one is replaced. You may want to remove yours and inspect it for carbon or dirt contamination.

Additionally, check to make sure there are no engine vacuum leaks. Confirm that the air inlet tube between the air filter and throttle body is properly attached. Here is a link that shows how to check for engine vacuum leaks:
