I wish I could say it was uncommon but it's not really. I have seen a few Ford models with the same issue, water getting into the interion and into the BCM. The repair on most of them is the same though, replace the BCM. The physical replacement is easy, remove the right side kick panel trim, unplug the connectors, remove the two nuts and pull the module out, reverse that to put the new one in. However the problem for the DIY repair is that before you remove the original module you need to use a dealer level scan tool with a specific interface to download the vehicle configuration files from the current BCM. Then you upload those into the replacement unit. Now if you wanted to spend the time and money you could get a copy of FORScan (forscan. Org) and the correct dongle and have a tool that should be able to do that.
