When the car is first started it backfires. Turn it off and then on, still backfires. I leave it on for a bit and after it "warms up" the backfiring stops and the car runs fine. I took it to the mechanic and had the spark plugs and wires changed. The problem still existed. They then said wires are probably crossed. Then they said it was some other thing (forgot the name) replaced that. Still backfiring. Now they are saying it is the head gasket. Could this be possible?

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.com.

If the backfire stops after awhile, then it is not crossed wires. That would be a problem all the time. Can you tell me if the check engine light was on? Also, was the part they replaced called a crankshaft position sensor? Also, when it backfires, does the sound come from under the hood or through the exhaust? Has anyone checked fuel pressure?

I realize that is a lot of questions, sorry. However, if you can tell me, it will help me determine the cause. Also, here is a link which describes different causes for a backfire and how to identify problems. Take a look through it and see if you find it helpful. I will be here to answer your questions when they come up.

Again, let me know if you have questions or need help with anything.

Take care and I will watch for your reply.

Joe

Hi again. I am sorry I forgot to answer your one specific question. A bad head gasket should not cause this type of problem.
