Two nights ago I had to take my friend to the hospital. I unlocked the passenger door with the key and the alarm went off. I ran to the drivers side to shut off the alarm. Now it will not crank. Nothing, the only lights on the cluster panel that comes on is the mileage light. I tried the unlock and lock procedures on both sides, I tried the key on engine off, I disconnected the battery for ten minutes, thirty minutes, and for an hour and still nothing. A friend said I might have to replace the ignition. Can someone come up with something? It is my transportation to work.
Thanks,
Darrell

Hello,

It sounds like the battery is weak or the micro switch in door latch on the passenger side is not working. Can I ask if the security light is flashing on the dash?

Cheers, Ken

Only when the doors are locked. I think maybe it is the ignition actuator.
Thank you, Ken.

Test the voltage at the battery. When you went to the drivers side did using the key shut off the alarm? Then it would not start correct? When you turn the key none of the dash lights work? How about the horn or if you turn on the headlights?
The security system in that car does not disable it that way, everything will still come on and work but it disables the fuel system and ignition so it will turn over but not start.
The description sounds more like a bad battery or corroded connection.

As a clarification is this the two door coupe or a convertible? Different platforms were used to build them, The coupe is a Mitsubishi while the convertible is a Chrysler product so the wiring is different.

Okay, that is basically an Eclipse with Chrysler clothing. There system disables only the fuel so the engine will still crank over but it will not start.
Did the system disable with the key? Did you run your friend to the hospital, return and now it does not start? It really does sound more like a bad battery or connection.

I am getting 11.9 volts from the terminals on the battery. Windows, head lights, and interior lights are working good. That should mean connections and battery are good, right?

11.9 is a weak battery. You should see 12.6 on a fully charged battery and many vehicles are susceptible to errors caused by a weak battery. If you have a battery charger you can see if it will charge back up. Or take it to one of the places that offers battery testing and see what it tests at for cranking amps.
Did this fail after you got back from the hospital? That would tend to rule out the alarm system as it would not have let you run the car after it went off if it hadn't disarmed.
When you turn on all those items and turn the key do they dim or anything? If not it could be as simple as a bad starter relay or a ignition switch.

Thank you. The car would not start before I went to the hospital. I fully charged the battery last night. When I get back from church I am going to see if the automatic shut off relay is good. If not, I will remove the steering column cover and check the ignition switch, and the ignition actuator. The pin going into the switch is probably worn or broke.
Thanks again for your help.

Okay, so the alarm went off you went around and tried to start it and nothing worked. When you turn the key to the on position what happens? Do things like the windows and radio work? If so it is not the switch as it turns on the power to them.
Does it crank at all?
