Hello, we have replaced the alternator on my car, but as we tried to tighten the bolt that tightens the timing belt, the belt was not tightening like the videos we have watched said, and the bolt also snapped. Now we are unsure of what to do apart from buy a new bolt and try again. We would like to know how to put tension back on the timing belt so I can start driving my car again.

Thanks for visiting 2CarPros.

The tension-er is mounted on an eccentric. Pushing it clockwise from the left should tighten it. The spring should take up most of the slack put you will need to push some. A short pry-bar will add enough tension. If the tension-er is not going left to right in a rising arc you need to replace it. I'll post an image below on how to push it.

Hello again, when we were taking off the alternator we had to undo two bolts in which released the tension on the timing belt and we watched many videos that said we just had to tighten the bolts again to put the tension back on.

I think you may have the timing belt and accessory drive belt confused. Could you post a picture?

Thanks, what you need to do is loosen the pivot bolt and lock bolt then turn the adjusting bolt clockwise to tighten. Once the belt is tight you may tighten the lock and pivot bolt. I'll post a picture below.

So do we have to tighten the adjusting bolt first before tightening the other bolts for the belt to get tight?
