I was driving along fine when it started making a sound and acting like it was bogging down, or in the wrong gear. It also gave off a burning smell. I check the battery and got a different reading every time. After leaving it all night and cold starting it, the alternator became too hot to touch within less than a minute.

check voltage at battery it can be a bad battery/alternator or both. It may be a bearing going bad in alternator. also check the belt and tensioner as both are recommended replacement at 60,000 mi. alternators will be warm due to charging also make battery connections are clean
