lift gate lock mechanism

I have a 1987 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 litre, 4dr 4 wheel driv evehichle. Some one shoved a twig in the lock mechanism. I got most of it out but the key won't go all the way in, thus I can't open the lift gate. Is there anything I could do?

If you take a hack saw blade and grind down the back if it til it comes to a point but leaves the teeth present, you may be able to extract more with this homemade tool. You may need to replace the cylinder.
