how can u tell if the fuel pump is bad

Welcome to the forum. :)

First thing to try is to listen for it running. When the key is turned to the on position you should hear the buzz for a second or two. If you don't hear it in the drivers seat recruit a helper and try listening at the filler pipe with the gas cap off.

N0 hum = no pumping. Check the fuses and the relay before condeming the pump as a failure.
