94 Eddie B Explorer 4X4 problems

Cannot get 4X4 to engage..fuse good and no light on annunciator when dash button pushed..where should I start troubleshooting? hAsnt been used much suspect this is proble..can u engage system without engine running?

Your can engage it without the engine running what i would do is get underneath and remove the actual motor that makes the switch work try engaging it without the motor being "on" the transfer case if it spins and tries to engage while off the case it may be something in the transfer case if it doesn't move it is either the motor or something electrical between the switch and the motor.
