On older chevy's, the kind you can work on yourself in the drive at home- it's pretty simple to take out the switch, actually. To remove the shaft that holds the knob on you have to find a little spring loaded button on the switch unit itself. Reach up behind the dash and find the boxy switch and feel around on it- I think it is on the column side of the switch for the button, press it in and pull knob out- it should come all the way out of the switch and clear the way to remove the dash faceplate. Can be a pain the first time or so but once you get it it's really easy after that. Good luck. Oh, it is also held on with a nut on a threaded shaft that sticks through but I'm sure you have seen that part.
