my grand am has never given me any trouble...until now. My add coolant light came on so I added the coolant. It seems to have a leak, although none of the hoses appear to be damaged.
I want to test the thermostat to see if maybe it is sticking, but I have no idea where the thermostat on an 04 grand am is.

Please could someone help me with this one? If my husband found out I broke the car it would be horrible.

If your still under warrenty, take it back to the dealer. If you are loosing coolant, and not seeing a leak, then the leak has to be internal. It can be leaking into your oil, or into the intake and being burnt and out the exhaust.
If the thermostat goes bad, then you will have over heating problems. No overheating problems, and the thermostat is working normally.

Thank-you. The car is overheating which leads me to beleive the thermostat is sticking. Also the leak is coming from under the reserve which would also indicate a sticking thermostat. I had this problem with my 97 grand am but on that one I knew where the thermostat was. I don't where it is on this one.

2.2L or 3.4L?

If a 3.4L it is mounted to the end of the Intake manifold. It says you need to remove the crossover exhaust pipe to gain access to the Thermostat Housing. The houseing looks like a small metal tube that attaches to the upper radiator hose. The thermostat is under the housing i mounted in the intake manifold.

2.2L is probably just as much a pin. If you have an automatic tranny, you have to remove the exhaust manifold. Then remove the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe. The thermostat is located under the pipe.

Suggested Repair

Confirm whether the engine is a 2.2L or 3.4L before testing the thermostat. On the 3.4L, it is at the end of the intake manifold beneath the housing connected to the upper radiator hose, and the crossover exhaust pipe must be removed for access. On an automatic 2.2L, remove the exhaust manifold and the thermostat housing-to-water-pump feed pipe to reach it. Also investigate possible internal coolant loss and the overheating rather than assuming the thermostat is the only cause.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 2004 Grand Am reported an add-coolant warning, a coolant leak, and later overheating, and asked where the thermostat is located. The expert explained that unexplained coolant loss can be internal and that thermostat failure is associated with overheating. The expert then gave access locations for both the 3.4L and automatic 2.2L engines.
