The large plastic box (with a snorkel) located before the air filter (behind the headlight almost in the wheel well) in the air intake assembly fell out and smashed. So now the fresh air just goes into the bottom of the air filter box through the filter and into the engine. What did the box do and is it necessary?

It just brings in cool/fresh air from the front of the vehicle and not warm air from under the hood. It should be replaced but it is not a necessity. As long as air is passing through the air filter that is good. If it is not too expensive and can be found, I would replace it.
