Vehicle is the XLT model. Fell out of cruise control twice and tire pressure light came on for a bit then off. Began running rough and check engine light came on. Mechanic changed oil and plugs. Light off then right back on. Then car when cold and starting up a hill became loud and rpm's were wacky. Mechanic spent hours trying to diagnose and cane to think the computer was the problem therefore had to take to dealership. They said initially that the valve cover gasket was cracked and oil had gotten into plugs so they replaced them (after one week after my guy replaced them). Diagnostics and plugs/coil $700.00. Now saying one cylinder losing compression and need new engine. My mechanic is not convinced and I don’t want to have to pay another dealership for diagnostics. They want almost $4,000.00. To replace engine which makes no sense given the year. Anyone have opinion about weather the dealership is correct? Any advice greatly appreciated. Older woman without a lot of money. Thanks

Hello,

If number one cylinder is losing compression it is a serious issue, but let's not condemn the engine just yet. Let's first make sure we are losing compression in number one cylinder and if it is, let's find out why. Only then can we make an educated decision as to what would be best for you.
I have included a few links for you down below to go through:

Please go through these guides and get back to us with what you find out. We can go from there.

Thanks,
Alex

I do believe he said it was the number one cylinder. It just seems odd that my very experienced and honest mechanic who owned the vehicle and spent hours trying to find the problem would not have found this. He was fairly certain it was computer related given the codes and symptoms. Wondering if I dare drive it the twelve miles to get it back home and go from there. Thanks again!

Hello again,

We are not saying one person is right and one person is wrong. We are simply trying to help by giving you instructions on how to verify if you have a compression problem with one or more of your cylinders, so you can figure out on your own what is going on. We just want to help you get your vehicle fixed. Please let us know what we can do to help. That's what we are here for.

Thanks,
Alex
