What's the best way to tell when a car is due for a clutch job? My 6-speed still shifts fine, and there's no clutch slippage that I can detect after 58000 miles, but the tranny seems a little less, crisp, than it used to be. I don't race or anything with the car, but every now and then I do run through the gears pretty quickly. I've never had a problem, but want to make sure that I don't wait too long and cause damage to the tranny because I didn't notice the warning signs of a clutch wearing out. Any suggestions?

Hi there,

There is no set time to change the clutch, the usual sign is when the clutch take up is as soon as you bring the pedal up, and any clashing in reverse is another sign, heavy stop start traffic will stress a worn clutch so it may start to shudder a little then, but the release point is the best way to judge it.
