Accidentally raced the engine to excessive speed while starting. Engine actually started to cut out and vibrate a bit which I think is the engine speed limiter operating. Just happened once. Long story.

Can any damage result from this?

Hi there,

Yes you certainly can do damage to the engine, but if things are ok now, the chances are there is no problem with it. What can happen is a bearing can fail due to excessive load and little or no lubricant as the oil pump has not built up full pressure, excessive over speed can cause valve bounce, but the mail problem would be a damaged big end or main bearing, you may have scuffed a bearing already but this may not show up as problem for some time. The moral of the story is, try not to over speed your engine anytime.
