Airflow direction control, dual zone, both sides change from cold to hot air, but they are both blowing primarily from the defrost vents. Air blows up the windshield, and also out of the vents on top of the dash that point to the side windows. Just a trickle of air comes out of the passenger facing vents.

Hi,

It sounds like an issue with what is called the mode door actuator or on a Toyota, and air outlet servo motor. Take a look through this link first. You may find it of interest and helpful.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/air-vents-stay-in-the-defrost-position

This actuator is located on the left side of the HVAC box under the dash. You can access it from under the dash on the driver's side, but it is tight. See pic below

What I suggest is this. Remove the actuator but allow the electrical connector is still attached. Turn the key on and change the airflow direction to see if the motor responds.

Let me know what you find.

Take care,

Joe

Hey Joe,

Thanks for the information. I just took out the glove box and cleaned out the blower and replaced the cabin air filter, which looks like it hadn’t been changed in many years. I’m guessing it’s kind of the same process on the driver’s side dash panel, as far as dismantling the lower dash area to get to the actuator?

Hi,

Yes, it will be very similar. If you have a chance, let me know how things turn out for you. I'm interested in knowing if this takes care of the issue.

Okay, so we spent many hours working on accessing the vent door actuator. We removed the driver's side plastic cover, then the metal cover right behind the plastic cover that protects all the wiring and stuff. There was no way to access the actuator that we needed to replace. So, the bottom actuator is for the air temperature, and it is cable operated, the vent door actuator is the one that is just above that one as you showed in the picture, but it’s a bit farther towards the firewall, and it is buried behind metal struts, wire harnesses, and also the vent ducting. We removed struts and vents, pushed wire harnesses around as much as they allowed, and we could never reach the third bolt on the actuator that is located above the actuator. I said we, because I got my younger brother, who is slender and more agile than me, and he’s mechanically inclined, and we just got defeated on this one. I guess that I will live with the cabin air blowing out the defrost vents until I can afford to buy the Toyota part ($339) and have the dealership remove the entire dash to replace it ($1,200+/-).

Hi,

That isn't good. I never understood why vehicles are designed not to work on. If you want to try it yourself, I attached the directions for removing the dash. It's a lot of work, but not too difficult.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe
