My wife's Avalon recently has displayed symptoms with defroster and blower. The fan makes horrible noises, does not defrost now and sometimes will blow nasty smelling "smoke" into cabin. Yesterday while driving and at a stoplight a large amount of smoke blew into cabin and she notice the temp gauge went up to red. She parked car at store and let it cool down. Very difficult restarting but did and drove it home (2miles) and it is parked since. What should we be looking at? Thanks

That 2 mile drive home may have been the most expensive trip you ever made. There's a very good chance that could do very extensive internal damage. You need to get the system pressure tested and find out why it overheated. I would use a tow truck to get there.
