Speedometer does not work. I’ve replaced both front wheel speed sensors. I’ve been told it’s the ABS module. I’ve ordered the part but I read it needs to be programmed at the dealership. My question is, do I get the part programmed before or after installing it? Also, if you think my problem might be something else I would really appreciate it if you can make any suggestions in what it might be.

Thanks

Good morning,

Before assuming it is the module, did you have the codes checked?

I would have that checked first as that may be the issue.

If you replace the module, it must be programmed on the car.

The guy that worked on my car did run the codes. I can’t remember exactly what it said, but it was related to the ABS. At first we thought it was the wheel ABS sensor so we changed both. The problem persisted even after resetting it, so he told me he was pretty certain it was the module. I consulted with another mechanic and he told me the same thing. He said he was 99% sure that was the problem. I’m out of town and I’m visiting family. My brother in law is pretty good with cars so we decided to tackle the problem ourselves.

Hopefully, that’s the problem. Once it’s installed and I get it programmed at the dealership I will come back and advise if that solved the problem.

Thank you!

Got it. It is very rare that these fail.

There are two other sensors in the rear of the van as well.

Good luck. I hope that resolves the issue.

Can I ask you another question if you don’t mind? The mechanic said he didn’t think it was the rear sensors because of the speedometer. He said the rear wheels do not give the signal for the speedometer. Is that true? As I mentioned before, the speedometer stopped working. When those lights came on the speedometer stopped working on and off until it finally just stopped working period.

That is an inaccurate statement. The ABS system, all sensors are sending signals to the PCM and TCM for speedometer operation.

I assume they did not do a diagnostic on this system. If they did, checking the sensor outputs would be the first thing that should be done. You need a scan tool to monitor the outputs or you can do it manually.

Too many techs rely on just codes for condemning parts failures. Good old fashion diagnostics need to be done to confirm. That is an expensive guess on your dime.

So I wanted to give an update on my ABS issues. I took into consideration what ASEMASTER6371 said. I checked the power on the harnesses and there weren’t any issues, so I decided to change the rear ABS wheel sensors. I did this myself instead of paying someone. I figured if that solves the problem I could return the ABS module and save a few hundred bucks. It was like $320 with shipping and taxes. The sensors were like $30.00 each. The rear speed sensors did not solve the problem, so that only left the module to replace. (Side note: I learned that with the Grand Caravan if you put the key in the ignition and go from Acc to On 3 times in a row it will read you the error codes on the dash). I can’t remember the codes that I was getting but I believe one was U0121 or something like that. There two other similar codes and they were related to the ABS. I replaced the module but obviously the lights were still on because it has to be programmed at the dealership. The only difference was that when I did the Acc to On 3 times to get the error codes, none were displayed (good sign). This morning I went to the dealership and had it programmed. They charged me $163.00 with taxes and all. It took about an hour for them to do it, but when they were done, the ABS, ESP, brake light and check engine light were gone. So far no issues. So even though it it uncommon for those things to go bad, it was the issue. So all together with the sensors and the module, and the programming, it cost me about $600.00 to fix this issue. I still saved money because a mechanic was going to charge me $1,000.00 just to replace the module (with the module included).

So I’m not sure if anyone else will read this in the future, but hopefully it will help someone else in the future too.
