Hi,
What you described sounds like an issue with what is called the blend air door (also known as a temperature door actuator). This actuator is responsible for moving the blend air door to provide heat or A/C based on your selection.
What can happen is this. The actuator motor has a small plastic gear inside that can fail. Basically, the teeth on it will break off causing issues.
Oftentimes, when this does happen, you will hear a clicking sound when first starting the vehicle or when a temperature change is requested.
Take a look through this link. It explains in general how one is replaced and how it works.

If you look at pic 1 below, it shows the location of the actuator on your vehicle. The pic is of the underside of the dash.
The remaining pictures are the directions for replacing it.
Please understand that not being there makes this a theory. However, this is the door that controls the temperature, so this would be my first suspect. Also, make sure it just isn't loose.
Let me know what you find or if I can help in any way.
Take care,
Joe
