Recently bought Volvo s60 AWD 2013 that was involved in front accident - no warranty. Replaced mostly panels and bumpers but left lower control arm and left axel shaft as well since joint was broken and grease all over. Car drove normally until last night. Heard loud clunk from left front to middle section and seemed that something was blocking the wheel or car was not shifting properly. Took it to general mechanic on a trailer and he stated there is space between axle rod and transmission, he shook the rod and it was moving. Can it be that something broke inside transmission; is there any bearings accessible from outside of transmission? Can this be software related since it did not happen at first, I drove the car for over 100 miles after repair? What would you do?

Check the axle shaft inner joints for bearing damage. If the problem is from within the transmission, it has to be disassembled for access.

How do you check them? Can this also be a software issue since it is not present all the time?

If it is a software problem, you would not be getting excessive play at the axle shaft and most probably a scan tool would show something.

The axle shafts inner part is a joint that is flexible but it should not have any side play. You need to shake it to see if there are any side play and might have to remove it to check for smoothness when it is being twisted.

If I need to replace transmission:
1) can it be replaced without taking complete engine out?
2) does it need reprogramming and can it be done if used transmission is purchased?
Thanks

Removal of transmission does not require the engine to be taken out but I am not sure about whether p[rogramming is required as we do not have the information in our database.
