It appears I have an oil or transmission leak from bell housing cover. What should I do? Thanks.

Roycar71,

It appears to be difficult to tell whether that is engine oil or transmission fluid. Transmission fluid is typically red where engine oil is more of a dark blackish color. Regardless of which fluid leaks typically get worse. Judging by the location where you are seeing the fluid it could be the rear main seal of the engine, or possibly the torque converter or transmission seal, would you be able to provide more pictures?

Not looking more carefully first time. I think it could be some kind of seal. Here are some more pics.

It would benefit me to know whether the fluid has a reddish color or if it’s a darker brown or black, so I know which diagrams to pull for you.

To me that sounds like an engine oil leak. If it’s coming from the bellhousing, it’s more likely the rear main of the engine or the rear of the oil pan and running down the bell housing. To replace the oil pan gasket, you’d have to drop the oil pan providing there is enough clearance. If you can isolate it to coming from the bellhousing that would signify the rear main in which case, you’d need to remove the transmission. Hopefully this helps,
Dustin

Actually, it looks like it is coming from a metal plate that has 2 bolts and screws into top part of the oil pan. It's in Pic that I sent. I think that has a gasket.

Hi,

I noticed you haven't been contacted for a couple of days and was wondering if you have made any progress. As far as the leak, I agree with Dgademsey. It is engine oil. I believe it is leaking from where the oil filter housing and oil cooler are bolted together. There is a gasket between the two surfaces.

Here is what to do. When the engine is cold, take a can of brake cleaner and spray the oil off the area above the oil filter. Drive the vehicle for a day or two and reinspect that area.

I attached a pic below showing what I'm referring to. At the oil filter housing, there are two steel pipes. One is a supply, and one is the return from a remote cooler.

Try this and let us know what you find.

Take care,

joe
