I'm changing the oil in my 2009 Chevy Silverado. I thought that I successfully located the Oil Filter and removed and then took loose what I thought was the Oil Plug, A grey oil came out. Not black? Is this a synthetic oil or did I remove the plug for the transfer case or some kind of other fluid. The plug was located towards the drivers side and close to the fron axle. This is a 5.3L V8 Z71 2009 Chevy Silverado. Does anyone know what fluid I might need to replace and how?

Was this plug in the front of the frame crossmember, and is there a larger plug almost directly above it? It sounds like you removed the front axle drain plug. The fluid that is required in that is synthetic, the GM # is 89021677. It is 75w-90 synthetic, and you may be able to find equivalent brand like castrol or valvoline.

Yes, it was attached to some kind of a transfer case, and close to the Drivers Side Axle. Thanks for the input. When I noticed it did not look like Oil I immediately screwed the plug back in, It wasn't a lot and it definately sits on top of the oil that I had drained from the oil filter. SO where is the Engine Oil Plug?

Also, should I risk driving the truck and if I purchase the correct synthetic fluid, where do you fill this transfer case at?

It should be fine to drive as you need it, as long as sustained highway speeds is not involved. The fill plug should be a larger one above the one you removed. The oil pan drain plug is at the rear of the frame, on the passenger side of the pan.

Thank you for your help. Your expertise has helped a lot. I tried to check to make sure that I had not over drained the Front Axle Gear Oil but I could not get the fill plug loose. If the truck had the parking brake would that make this possible or should the fill plug come loose?

There should be no influence a parking brake is going to have, in the fill plug removal. It makes me believe that you may be after the wrong thing. The fill plug should be almost level with the drivers side front axle stub shaft, and forward of it. It should be about the diameter of a silver dollar, with a 15mm hex type head. The disclaimer is, I work in a Cadillac service department, and that is the configuration of late model Escalades, which are K trucks with different trim. I am assuming it is the same, at least 95% sure.

I just purchased a 2006 chevy silverado 2wd 5.3liter with 84,000 miles. Lotta miles for that year, but it was superbly taken care of.
This is my question I changed the oil in it today. I used mobile 1 synth. Oil and mobile 1 filter. I went with 10w30 instead of 5w30 because of the higher mileage, is this ok or should I go back to 5w30 next oil change. If so, is there a point in the vehicles life when it would be benificial to switch oil viscosities.
I live in Louisiana. Mild winters and brutal summers.
Almost never below 20 degrees and usually above 90 in the summers.

No problem whatsoever, at about 75k+ you should switch to high mileage oil. Dont worry about changing viscosity's at age, should go thicker in the summer though and thinner in winter.

Garage did an oil change and filter, but forgot to install a new filter and did not put oil back into the engine. I get about 1.5 miles down the road and she quits. Goes into safe mode or something.

They have it towed back and fire the mech who messed this up and filled it with oil and new filter and say everything is fine. I can hear a slight clicking sound but generally the engine runs good.

Can you tell me how this safe mode works and what can trigger it and how can I tell if this may have caused damage that will manifest itself later on? Are there any additional things I should do or have inspected and documented.

Safe mode stops the engine so no further damage will happen. Pretty much it. If you drove it a mile and half and it quit then it may not have done much damage because engines can run a long time without oil. The clicking you are hearing may be the lifters due to lack of oil and may go away if not, the place the did the damage is responsible for that or any other engine damage like bearings, cam, etc. Moving parts due to not putting oil in vehicle. They should have explained that or at least go back and have them put something In writing so you are protected. They should warranty it for no damage for at least a year if nothing else. If they are unwilling to do this then either see a lawyer or maybe small claims court.

Dropped my Truck off to have the oil changed and check the oil pressure gauge. Sending unit had been replaced but was again not working properly. Was told to return when the gauge was messing up again so they could hook truck up to computer and see if there was a code/problem.
Payed my bill and drove off. Made it about a mile when the truck died. I tried to crank it again and it sounded like it my key was stuck in the crank position. Tried it again, same thing. Checked the oil, and it was dry. No oil.
Called the oil place and told them. They came and met me with 5 quarts of oil. Told me the truck had a built in shut off incase it ever had no oil in it. They added oil then wanted to take it back to shop and check it out. The mechanic lived near me and he wanted to keep it and drive it home to make sure it was ok. I was not at the shop when he took it back to see if it was ok.
He brought the truck to me. Said it seemed to be fine.
I suppose if the oil pressure gauge had been working it would have stopped me from driving it at all. And also I guess the person who changed the oil would not have been able to drive it out of the bay and park it out front for me. But the bottom line is, I and he both drove it with no oil in it.
At this time the only thing I notice different is when it cranks up, it runs ruff. Like the idle is off. I pull a boat and trailer and have not had the chance ot see if performance has been effected. My mechanic friends tell me to go to the oil change place and tell them I need a new motor. That I may not have damage showing up now, but it will later. What is your advice? Thank you.

I agree with your friends take it back and have new engine put in but I would also say have another shop do the work and charge the one that messed up your truck the damage may not be showing now but you don't want it to while pulling the boat makes for not so fun time on lake
